Word processing

LSPs receive projects in a variety of formats. They may receive scanned copies of a handwritten document more than 50 years old, a document printed and scanned, a new software program, or a recently developed website which needs to be localized in another language. Each of these projects require a different approach when it comes to typesetting, processing, and design.

Our team utilizes the most current versions of word-processing software including OpenOffice, MS Word, and WordPerfect. We have researched and succeeded in handling issues that occur in the processing of documents for right-to-left languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian (Farsi) in various interfaces such as MS Word, Adobe InDesign, and Illustrator. Below are some examples of some recent enhancements to our document processing:

  • Using MS Word for MAC for Dari and Pashto documents
  • Enhancing the OCR process for documents in Persian and Arabic
  • Removing half-spaces that appear in Urdu.
  • Utilizing Unicode/UTF-8-character coding to handle right to left Middle Eastern texts in Windows software

DTP

Many of our clients are LSPs seeking support with their Middle Eastern translation projects. These projects often have various scopes and components that need to be evaluated and understood in depth in order to take them to completion. One important component of finalizing the translation project is the desktop publishing (DTP). This involves formatting the translation so it matches the appearance of the original document or the layout the client is seeking. This step often causes problems for many translation companies because the right to left direction of Middle Eastern languages makes the DTP process more challenging. Our specialized DTP software and designers, skilled in working with left to right texts, enable this goal to be accomplished. Middle Eastern speaking clients know how their native languages are supposed to look in print. They are unique and appear very different from the romance languages. A non-native or a person unfamiliar with proper fonts for Arabic, Persian or Urdu will not know that. Fonts invoke different emotional responses in a reader. For example, we would not apply a Farsi font to an Arabic text or vice versa even if the fonts look very similar and speakers of both languages can read both scripts.

These important details are overlooked by many companies since they do not have DTP professionals skilled in Middle Eastern languages that handle the formatting aspect of the projects.

Through many years of experience, research and collaboration with clients and translators of Arabic, Persian (Farsi), Kurdish, Hebrew, Pashto, Dari, Turkish, and Armenian, we now believe we have a better understanding, and better eye for some of the common challenges and errors that arise while providing DTP service. We do also advise our clients or give them counsel when needed.

Some of the challenges we have resolved include:

  • Page and text direction
  • Unsupported Adobe PageMaker and Microsoft Publisher files
  • Video subtitling script design
  • Date, time, and currency formats
  • E-commerce payments
  • Exporting the document into a PDF file to avoid changes in format when printing
